The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Alfred J. Torrance (ASN: 0-1296118), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company G, 410th Infantry Regiment, 103d Infantry Division. During the period 23 to 24 January 1943, the enemy launched repeated strong attacks against company G near ****, France. Captain Torrance, informed that an approximate 400-yard gap existed between adjacent units and his company, dashed under fire into the enemy occupied town, located isolated elements of his company who were engaged with the enemy and led them back to his position across an open slope. He then personally shifted his men to close the dangerous gap. His men, inspired by his cool fearlessness under fire, held their position against a determined enemy, who during the action attempted to blast them out with direct fire from 12 self-propelled guns. Captain Torrance’s actions reflected the highest traditions of the military service.
