The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Richard C. Timpe (ASN: 0-1325947), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 117th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 8 October 1944, in Germany. While his regiment was engaged in a vigorous attack against the enemy, First Lieutenant Timpe distinguished himself when he led his platoon in the assault. Although painfully wounded, he refused evacuation and elected to remain with his platoon, which was being subjected to increasing enemy pressure, until victory had been assured. First Lieutenant Timpe was evacuated eight hours after he had been wounded. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by First Lieutenant Timpe, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
