Headquarters, 30th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 189 (July 16, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Vernon L. Tillotson (ASN: 34008067), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 120th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 7 October 1944, in Germany. Disregarding his own personal safety, Staff Sergeant Tillotson exposed himself to enemy machine gun fire by crawling fifty yards to the aid of a wounded man. While evacuating the wounded soldier, he was wounded and forced to remain in an exposed position until darkness before assistance reached him. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Staff Sergeant Tillotson, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
