The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Millard L. Tierce, Jr., United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 314th Infantry Regiment, 79th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 23 June 1944, in France. After a rifle company with supporting machine gun platoon gained its objective, it was determined that due to the heavy casualties sustained and the dangerously low ammunition supply, a withdrawal was imperative. Although there was but one box of ammunition for each weapon, Captain Tierce and his machine gun platoon remained on the objective and successfully covered the withdrawal of the rifle company. Then, Captain Tierce remained to cover the withdrawal of his own men with only a rifle, and finally returned safely to former friendly lines. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
