The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Corporal Carlton Ogdon Tidrick (ASN: 20929835), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company F, 2d Battalion, 163d Infantry Regiment, 41st Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces near Sanananda Point, New Guinea, on 16 January 1943. Corporal Tidrick led his squad in an attempt to turn an enemy position which was holding up his company’s advance. When within 20 yards of the enemy, the squad was held up by heavy rifle and machine gun fire. Although wounded in the chest, side and forearm, Corporal Tidrick continued to lead his squad in an effort to continue the attack. Finding further advance impossible, he sent for reinforcements, meanwhile dressing the wound of a member of his squad. On receipt of orders to withdraw his squad, he directed the movement without further casualties, assisting his wounded comrade to the aid station, and reporting the situation to his commanding officer. As a result of the attack of this squad, the enemy withdrew from the position, thus permitting the company to advance to its objective. Corporal Tidrick’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 41st Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
