The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Roy William Thomas (ASN: 32790861), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company K, 3d Battalion, 120th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 14 January 1945, in Belgium. Although he realized the extreme hazards involved in the operation, Private First Class Thomas Volunteered to guide supply vehicles to front line companies through intermittent artillery and mortar fie and over a route previously zeroed in by the enemy. Leaving his sheltered position, he moved alongside his vehicle in preparation for leaving. A heavy concentration of artillery fire fell in the area mortally wounding him. Private First Class Thomas’ devotion to duty and gallant action were a source of inspiration to all who observed him. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Private First Class Thomas, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
