The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Ogwin S. Tharp (ASN: 37395516), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 120th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 7 August 1944, in France. Although his vehicle was destroyed, Private First Class Tharp refused to go to the rear but went forward to help man an outpost which was protecting an encircled company of his battalion. When it became necessary to warn his company of the approach of a tank, he volunteered to remain behind to cover the withdrawal of his battalion. Private First Class Tharp gallantly remained in his position pouring withering fire into the enemy ranks until his comrades had withdrawn before he left his position. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Private First Class Tharp, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
