Headquarters, 30th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 110 (November 30, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technician Fifth Grade [then Private] John F. Taylor (ASN: 31327888), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 743d Tank Battalion (Separate), attached to the 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 5 October 1944, in Germany. Technician Fifth Grade Taylor was a member of a tank crew which was hit by fire from an enemy gun during an offensive operation. When the crew abandoned the tank, Technician Fifth Grade Taylor discovered that two of his comrades were not present. Thinking they were wounded and still in the tank, Technician Fifth Grade Taylor risked his life by reentering the tank although the enemy was still firing at it. Upon finding his comrades had been killed, he drove the damaged tank back to friendly lines. By his actions, Technician Fifth Grade Taylor displayed exemplary courage under fire. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Technician Fifth Grade Taylor, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
