The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technical Sergeant Herbert R. Taylor (ASN: 6793477), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 120th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 23 February 1945, in Germany. While approaching the objective, Technical Sergeant Taylor’s company encountered a heavily mined woods and incurred numerous casualties which caused the advance to waver. Aware of the urgency of continuing the advance he assumed leadership of a machine gun section whose leader had become a casualty and boldly advanced into the woods. Technical Sergeant Taylor, completely disregarding his safety, disarmed and cleared scores of anti-personnel mines from his path, thereby enabling his section to reach the objective without further casualties. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Technical Sergeant Taylor, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
