The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Fred Tarver (ASN: 38181723), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 119th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 17 October 1944, in Germany, Staff Sergeant Tarver fearlessly led a patrol against enemy pillboxes in an attempt to neutralize their fire. Covered by the fire of his men he approached one pillbox, and despite the enemy fire directed at him, succeeded in tossing three hand grenades into the pillbox, killing three of the enemy and wounding two others. Staff Sergeant Tarver and his comrades then fired rifle grenades at four remaining pillboxes which resulted in the killing of four more enemy soldiers, wounding thirteen others, and the capture of nineteen more. Staff Sergeant Tarver’s gallant leadership in the face of seemingly insurmountable obstacles reflects great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Armed Forces.
