The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Colonel (Infantry) Benjamin Randolph Farrar (ASN: 0-12351), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving as Executive Officer, 127th Infantry Regiment, 32d Infantry Division, in action near Buna Mission, New Guinea, 22 December 1942 and 23 December 1942. Lieutenant Colonel Farrar, while under enemy automatic and sniper fire, made numerous and valuable reconnaissance of the Island, just southwest and adjacent to Buna Mission. Lieutenant Colonel Farrar voluntarily assisted in the taking and mopping up of the island position. Lieutenant Colonel Farrar’s cool, courageous and intelligent leadership contributed greatly to the successful termination of this operation. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Lieutenant Colonel Farrar, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
