The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant Daniel H. Swett, Canadian Army, for gallantry in action while attached to the 35th “Battle Mountain” Infantry Regiment of the 88th Infantry Division, United States Army in the Italian Campaign during World War II. While reconnoitering a town in advance of his combat patrol, First Lieutenant Swett and an enlisted man boldly attacked a machine gun emplacement with hand grenades when the enemy discovered the patrol and opened fire. Despite hostile fire and a wound from a grenade fragment, the officer continued to advance and succeeded in destroying the machine gun position and killing one soldier and wounding the other in it. The patrol then was able to withdraw safely. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the Canadian Army.
