The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant Hugh Bearden Moorman (ASN: 54619), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company K, 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Cantigny, France, 27 May 1918. During an enemy raid on his trench position Sergeant Moorman was wounded in the arm early in the engagement. He refused to be evacuated and personally directed the defense of the trench. He exposed himself to artillery and rifle fire and killed three Germans with his rifle.
