The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Second Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Third Award of the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Walter A. Wert, Jr. (ASN: 0-1295308), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 120th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 23 February 1945, in Germany. Captain Wert organized his men and led them in an attack through enemy fire across the Roer River. He courageously maintained the momentum of the attack by remaining at the head of his company and pushing forward despite intense machine gun, small arms, artillery, and mortar fire. Following his gallant example, he men advanced into an enemy town, crushing all resistance. When an enemy strongpoint slowed the attack in the town, Captain Wert remained forward of his troops completely exposed to a hail of machine gun and automatic fire to direct them in the successful attack on the fortified position. The bravery, aggressive determination, and exemplary leadership exhibited by Captain Wert reflect great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Armed Forces.
