Headquarters, 30th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 59 (September 18, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Herbert L. Sullivan (ASN: 35639619), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 197th Field Artillery Battalion, 30th Infantry Division on 7 August 1944, in France. Private Sullivan was assigned to duty as a truck driver with a field artillery organization. An enemy counterattack spearheaded with infantrymen supported by tanks beset the unit and threatened to envelop the motor park in which Private Sullivan was bivouacked. With complete disregard for his personal safety, Private Sullivan left his shelter and aggressively moved forward to meet the hostile force, employing his rocket launcher so skillfully that he disabled one enemy tank and forced the other to withdraw to a position from which its fire was not effective. The superior soldiership and personal attributes exhibited by Private Sullivan reflect great credit on himself and are in keeping with the highest traditions of the Armed Forces.
