The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Charles F. Sullivan, Jr. (ASN: 0-1321846), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 117th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 7 August 1944, in France. Although he was seriously wounded in three places by the enemy, Second Lieutenant Sullivan sought shelter in a ditch and covered the withdrawal of three comrades. Despite being wounded four more times, he gallantly remained in his position, firing his carbine until the enemy overwhelmed him and took him prisoner. Second Lieutenant Sullivan’s great self-sacrifice allowed his three comrades to escape from either death or capture. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Second Lieutenant Sullivan, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
