Headquarters, 4th Armored Division, General Orders No. 68 (1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Bernard P. Sullivan, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving as a machine gunner the *** Armored Infantry Battalion, 4th Armored Division, in action against the enemy in France, in 1945. During the enemy infantry-tank attack near Reichicourt, Private First Class Sullivan, manning a machine gun, held all enemy infantry pinned to the ground by laying down a withering hail of machine gun fire, after they had advanced to a range of 25 yards. He remained at his position even while he was attacked by an enemy tank, firing its machine guns at him point blank, and held his ground until he was wounded. The great courage and bravery displayed by Private First Class Sullivan, and his stubborn refusal to give any ground in the face of overwhelming odds, are worthy of the highest praise and reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
