The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Edmond Suggs (ASN: 38522343), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 27th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 16 April 1945, near Machinato airfield on Okinawa. While his company was assaulting a village near the airfield, Private Suggs displayed great fortitude and initiative. Although enemy fire was incessant, he ran across open terrain to assist an automatic rifleman in knocking out enemy machine gun positions. In the fire fight that followed, his comrade was seriously wounded. He then picked up the weapon and assaulted the enemy position, resulting in the annihilation of the crew and the destruction of the gun. In this action Private Suggs was himself slightly wounded, but he returned to his injured comrade and attempted to move him to the rear. While he was doing this, he himself was shot and killed by enemy fire. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
