The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Staff Sergeant Charles A. Strebel (ASN: 12033712), United States Army, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving with the 84th Infantry Division, in action in Belgium, on 23 December 1944. When an enemy artillery concentration upon his company’s positions threatened the safety of the unit’s personnel, Staff Sergeant Strebel, disdaining the danger while exposing himself to the barrage, made his way form house to house to warn occupants to seek proper shelter. During this action, Sergeant Strebel was instantly killed when struck by shell fragments. The unselfish, courageous action, initiative, and superior performance of duty displayed by Staff Sergeant Strebel reflect high credit upon himself and the military service.
