(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class John R. Strassburg, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with 34th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Castelina, Italy, in 1944. While laying a communication line to a mortar observation post in the vicinity of Castellina, Private First Class Strassburg completed the mission and remained to fire his own weapon on the attacking enemy. He gathered ammunition from wounded comrades, checked communications lines, and returned to his firing position. Although wounded, he displayed initiative and aggressiveness in the repulse of the counter-attack, inflicting many casualties on the enemy. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Private First Class Strassburg, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
