The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) James J. Turner (ASN: 0-2262113), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company G, 2d Battalion, 27th Infantry Regiment, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 22 September 1950, when the advance of his company was halted near Changnyhong-ni, Korea, by an enemy strongpoint located on a ridge and supported by machine guns and mortars, Lieutenant Turner volunteered to lead an assault party to clear the enemy from the ridge. The first attack up the hill was stopped below the crest by intense mortar and machine gun fire. When reorganization was completed, he led his party up the hill, charged the enemy, overran the position and captured many weapons. Lieutenant Turner’s conspicuous bravery, outstanding initiative and inspiring leadership are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
