The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Edward D. Stewart (ASN: 34125022), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 315th Infantry Regiment, 79th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 5 July 1944 in France. When a withering fire from enemy small arms and machine guns arrested the advance of his company, Private Stewart voluntarily set up a light machine gun in the most advanced position and raked the enemy positions with a fire of such intensity that his company was able to resume the attack and outflank the enemy positions. The enemy directed the major portion of its fire power on Private Stewart’s position but he doggedly maintained it and continued to engage the enemy until he fell, mortally wounded. His initiative, fearless devotion to duty, and spirit of self sacrifice reflect highest credit on himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.
