Headquarters, 30th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 86 (October 25, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Charles M. Stewart (ASN: 0-1308557), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 120th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 8 August 1944, in France. First Lieutenant Stewart was serving with an infantry platoon given the mission of protecting a road block against a determined and sustained large-scale enemy counterattack. When the road block was subjected to the first attack, first Lieutenant Stewart, accompanied by a companion, voluntary moved forward into an exposed position, subjecting himself to heavy enemy fire, and succeeded in knocking out an enemy armored vehicle. Again on the second attack by the enemy, First Lieutenant Stewart repeated this same heroic act, this time accounting for an enemy tank. His gallant actions on these two occasions were an inspiration to his comrades in arms. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by First Lieutenant Stewart, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
