The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Lieutenant Colonel (Infantry) Carlton E. Stewart (ASN: 0-1284958), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 119th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 14 April 1945, in Germany. When a powerful enemy counterattack compelled his battalion to withdraw from a town and take up positions to the rear, Lieutenant Colonel Stewart, after seeing that the last of his units was safely out of the town, took up a position which enabled him to observe the approach of the enemy. From this exposed position, which was constantly subjected to heavy fire, Lieutenant Colonel Stewart directed artillery fire upon the enemy, destroying a fuel dump, damaging two tanks, and preventing the enemy from continuing their attack. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Lieutenant Colonel Stewart, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
