The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Alfred A. St. Germaine, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 1st Armored Division in North Africa in 1943. After two of his platoon of light tanks were wrecked by German shell fire on the front line in Tunisia, Sergeant St. Germaine left his place of shelter and in the face of heavy fire went to assist in the rescue of a wounded man. By this time the burning vehicle he and an officer were using for protection while administering first aid was in danger of exploding. Hand grenades and ammunition in it already were exploding. He helped to move the injured soldier to the rear, then assisted in the operation on the man’s leg. The daring and heroic actions, complete disregard for personal welfare and self-sacrifice displayed by Sergeant St. Germaine reflect the finest traditions of the Armed Forces and are deserving of the highest praise.
