Headquarters, 85th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 75 (1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technical Sergeant Philip A. Square (ASN: 35305869), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company G, 339th Infantry Regiment, 85th Infantry Division, on 22 October 1944, in Italy. When his platoon, leading the attack upon an enemy held village, was subjected to intense machine gun fire, Technical Sergeant Square, determined to continue the assault, took command of a squad and led it in an attack upon enemy dugouts located within the town. Skillfully deploying his men as they moved upon the enemy emplacements, he personally killed three and captured five German soldiers and enabled the attacking forces to occupy the objective without loss.
