The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Major (Infantry) Henry G. Spencer (ASN: 0-337794), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving as Commanding Officer of the 1st Battalion, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in France. On 19 June 1944, the 1st Battalion, 23d Infantry Regiment attacked toward the high ground near St. George d’Elle, France. While one company was advancing through a draw it received such heavy shelling from enemy mortars and artillery that the advance was halted momentarily. Major Spencer, commanding the 1st Battalion, immediately went through the barrage to the scene of action and directed artillery fire which silenced the enemy batteries. While thus engaged he was seriously wounded in the head by shrapnel but stayed at the front until the attack was resumed. Only then did he submit to medical treatment. Immediately returning to his battalion he continued to direct the attack until his eyes failed him and he could no longer see. He was then led to the rear for medical treatment. The heroism and unswerving devotion to duty displayed by this officer was an inspiration to his command and reflects great credit upon himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.
