The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technical Sergeant Albert L. Spencer (ASN: 36180662), United States Army, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving with the 33d Infantry Division. On 26 March 1945, Sergeant Spencer, with a group of five men, was maintaining a trail block located in a rocky draw in the vicinity of Camp 3, Mountain Province, Luzon, Philippine Islands. The enemy apparently had reconnoitered this area during daylight hours and prepared an attack for the ensuing night. The enemy attacked with definite, well planned moves, and great fury. Sergeant Spencer, with the greatest of courage, held fast to his position, and at an opportune moment returned withering fire on the numerically superior force attacking him. Enemy dead marked the path of advance, which was halted approximately 5 yards from the trail block. The enemy then, in an attempt to drive Sergeant Spencer and his men from their position, set fire to the grass near the position. Without hesitation Sergeant Spencer gathered up canteen belonging to himself and his automatic rifleman, and under protective covering fire crawled to the burning area and sprinkled the water on the grass and ground, subduing the fire which was moving toward his position. Upon returning he directed the continual withering fire upon the enemy until the last thrust was repulsed. Sergeant Spencer’s gallant acts made possible the holding of his position which was vital to the trail block. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
