The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Major (Infantry) John C. Speedie (ASN: 0-323172), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the *** Infantry Regiment, 83d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 15 July 1944, in ****, France. The battalion commanded by Major Speedie was given the mission of taking an enemy strong point that had held out stubbornly against prior attacks. The advance was met by fierce resistance, including severe artillery and machine gun fire. To assure the accomplishment of the mission, Major Speedie personally led his troops forward and successfully took the position. When a counter-attack by enemy tanks was launched he personally destroyed one with a rocket launcher and led successful rocket launcher attacks against three more. Major Sepedie’s conspicuous bravery and leadership were an inspiration to the entire command. His action reflects great credit upon himself and the finest traditions of the military service.
