As Commanding Officer of an Infantry assault force, First Lieutenant Spector was leading his troops in a ferocious attack against the enemy when he received painful wounds. The enemy was determined to capture First Lieutenant Spector and several of his men but as soon as he realized their intentions, though painfully wounded, he continually directed his troops shouting directions to his men to increase their fire. He lost his life but the inspiration of his leadership inspired his men to greater efforts and the enemy counterattack was repulsed. The outstanding courage and leadership as well as the heroic soldiership displayed by this gallant officer reflect great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Armed Forces.

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Jean Simon Spector (ASN: 0-1306162), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company E, 2d Battalion, 119th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 10 August 1944, in France. First Lieutenant Spector was assigned to duty as a staff officer with an Infantry organization engaged in a bitter fight with enemy forces. A detachment of tanks had been attached to the infantry unit but during the ensuing fire fight contact had been lost. With complete disregard for his personal safety, First Lieutenant Spector voluntarily went in search of them over terrain covered with continual enemy fire, and upon discovering the tanks, led them without hesitation back to the fight. As a result of his dauntless courage and enthusiastic initiative, an important tactical success was achieved. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by First Lieutenant Spector, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
