The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Jean Simon Spector (ASN: 0-1306162), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company E, 2d Battalion, 119th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 29 August 1944, in France. As Commanding Officer of an Infantry assault force, First Lieutenant Spector was leading his troops in a ferocious attack against the enemy when he received painful wounds. The enemy was determined to capture First Lieutenant Spector and several of his men but as soon as he realized their intentions, though painfully wounded, he continually directed his troops shouting directions to his men to increase their fire. He lost his life but the inspiration of his leadership inspired his men to greater efforts and the enemy counterattack was repulsed. The outstanding courage and leadership as well as the heroic soldiership displayed by this gallant officer reflect great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Armed Forces.
