The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Lyman E. Spaulding (ASN: 36177432), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 105th Engineer Combat Battalion, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 16 November 1944, in Germany. During the advance of an infantry unit, Sergeant Spaulding and two companions volunteered for the hazardous mission of clearing a minefield which was under enemy observation and severe artillery and small arms fire. In spite of the extreme danger, Sergeant Spaulding and his companions successfully completed their mission. Through Sergeant Spaulding’s determination and outstanding courage, the armored vehicles supporting the advance were able to move into positions. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Sergeant Spaulding, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
