The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technician Fifth Grade Einar Sorensen (ASN: 37123385), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 743d Tank Battalion (Separate), attached to the 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 18 October 1944, in Germany. Technician Fifth Grade Sorensen was serving as a driver of an ammunition truck which was set afire in the bivouac area by enemy shelling. Seeing his truck ablaze, Technician Fifth Grade Sorensen left the safety of his shelter and attempted to extinguish the flames. He was unable to do so and elected to drive his truck as far away from the bivouac area as soon as possible. As soon as he had driven to a spot from which the explosion of his truck would not endanger his comrades, he successfully extinguished the fire. The quick thinking, initiative, courage, and determined devotion to duty exhibited by Technician Fifth Grade Sorensen probably saved the lives of many of his comrades as well as saving considerable material vitally needed in combat operations. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Technician Fifth Grade Sorensen, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
