Headquarters, 30th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 55 (September 13, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Albert P. Sommers (ASN: 0-1291719), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 117th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy from 7 to 9 August 1944, in France. First Lieutenant Sommers was assigned to duty as communications officer with an infantry force attacking the enemy. The communications lines were constantly under fire and were threatened by small enemy patrols. Despite these hectic conditions, First Lieutenant Sommers kept the communications lines intact for a considerable period of time. When a switchboard received direct hits and caused several casualties, First Lieutenant Sommers personally re-laid all the wires while the shelling continued, to re-establish communications. The maintenance of these communications was largely responsible for the successful conclusion of the operation. The zealous determination and personal bravery exhibited by First Lieutenant Sommers reflect great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Armed Forces.
