Philip Lauman graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, Class of 1937. Captured after the fall of the Philippine Islands in 1942, he was held as a Prisoner of War, and died aboard the Japanese “Hell Ship” Oryoku Maru when it was bombed by American planes while transporting American POWs to Japan.

The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Major Lauman, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
