Headquarters, 34th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 125 (August 12, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Master Sergeant Carl D. Snyder (ASN: 13184756), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Service Company, 133d Infantry Regiment, 34th Infantry Division, in action on 24 April 1945 in Italy. While carrying out the mission of protecting the regiment’s flank in its drive up Highway Number 9, Sergeant Snyder volunteered to go ahead of one of the battalions and reconnoiter the road for enemy and mines. Upon reaching a town several miles ahead of the troops, Sergeant Snyder entered the town alone although enemy tanks could be heard in the vicinity. Sergeant Snyder then returned and volunteered the use of his platoon’s vehicles to shuttle men of the battalion forward to contact the enemy. When Sergeant Snyder learned from civilians that an important bridge just beyond the town was defended and prepared for demolition, he organized a patrol and led them forward. Fearlessly exposing himself to the heavy enemy fire, Sergeant Snyder led his men in a fight with the enemy, killing one and capturing another. The remainder of the enemy fled. Sergeant Snyder then persuaded the prisoner to give him the information about the demolitions and then directed the prisoner in neutralizing the demolitions and mines. Sergeant Snyder’s daring and brilliant leadership resulted in the capture of the vital bridge and reflects great credit upon himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.
