(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Major (Field Artillery) Woodrow Maurice Smith (ASN: 0-22960), United States Army, for gallantry in action as S-2 (Intelligence Officer), 151st Field Artillery Battalion, 34th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Tunisia, North Africa, in 1943. Major Smith remained in front of an artillery observation post on hill 609 in Tunisia, while exposed to a heavy concentration of enemy fire. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Major Smith, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
