The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant Philip R. Smith, Sr. (ASN: 34972868), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 315th Infantry Regiment, 79th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 24 March 1945, in Germany. When his company was pinned down by enemy rifle and machine gun fire while advancing through the streets of Dinslaken, Sergeant Smith with complete disregard for personal safety exposed himself to fire on enemy positions. Fearlessly he fired two well-aimed shots from his rifle, killing two enemy machine gunners. Although he was successful in relieving the pressure on his company, allowing it to advance and attain its objective, an enemy sniper shot and mortally wounded him. The great courage and willing sacrifice displayed by Sergeant Smith in the behalf of his fellow soldiers reflect highest credit on himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.
