The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Merlin R. Smith (ASN: 39927096), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 119th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 25 February 1945, in Germany. Despite the grave danger of drawing enemy fire, Staff Sergeant Smith brought two comrades to the shelter of a crater and gave them first aid. He then rejoined his men and led them in overcoming all resistance to enter an enemy town and secure it. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Staff Sergeant Smith, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
