Headquarters, 30th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 147 (June 11, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Curtis M. Smith (ASN: 16155634), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 743d Tank Battalion (Separate), attached to the 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 11 July 1944, in France. When forced to abandon their disabled tank, Private Smith an a companion noticed a badly wounded infantryman attempting to crawl to safety. Without hesitation, Private Smith and his comrade heroically ran through heavy enemy shell fire to the wounded man and carried him to a covered position. While his companion treated the man’s wounds, Private Smith once more exposed himself to the enemy’s fire to run to the nearest aid station and obtain assistance and then returned to help evacuate the wounded man. Private Smith’s gallant actions reflect great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Armed Forces.
