Headquarters, 30th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 187 (July 14, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Charles I. Smith (ASN: 0-1316224), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 119th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 3 April 1945, in Germany. When his company was confronted by a large hill in the attack against a town, First Lieutenant Smith moved to forward positions to personally direct a flanking movement around the hill. Despite fierce enemy fire directed in his immediate area, he personally coordinated and speeded the movements of his men. His admirable example of courage and tenacity of purpose spurred the men on to greater efforts and resulted in the successful capture of the objective in a minimum of time. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by First Lieutenant Smith, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
