The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Corps of Engineers) Albert L. Smith (ASN: 0-1111363), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 105th Engineer Combat Battalion, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on e October 1944, in Germany. Prior to the initial assault across the Wurm River by infantry troops, First Lieutenant Smith’s engineer platoon was assigned the mission of bridging it. After personally making a reconnaissance under severe enemy fire, First Lieutenant Smith led the construction crew forward and they began their hazardous assignment. Although they were stopped several times by the intense enemy fire, First Lieutenant Smith kept the men organized and completed the assignment in a superior manner. His display of outstanding courage and devotion to duty were an inspiration to the men with whom he served. The bravery, aggressive determination, and exemplary leadership exhibited by First Lieutenant Smith reflect great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Armed Forces.
