The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Willard F. Smart (ASN: 0-1309423), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 117th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 27 August 1944, in France. During an advance, First Lieutenant Smart’s platoon was cut off from the remainder of the company, which had been held up by heavy enemy fire. Approaching darkness and the lack of communication created a serious threat to the isolated platoon. Displaying outstanding courage, First Lieutenant Smart organized his platoon into a defensive position and gallantry repulsed two enemy patrols during the night, thus denying the enemy an opportunity to determine the strength opposing them and forcing them to withdraw their numerically superior force. His bravery and outstanding leadership were instrumental in enabling his company to quickly reach their objective with a minimum of casualties when the attack was resumed the next morning. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by First Lieutenant Smart, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
