Fred Sladen graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, Class of 1929. His father was Major General Fred W. Sladen, USMA Class of 1890, who served as Commandant of Cadets and Superintendent of the United States Military Academy. His paternal grandfather, Major Joseph A. Sladen, earned the Congressional Medal of Honor for action in the Civil War. Fred Sladen retired in 1959 as a U.S. Army Brigadier General.

The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Lieutenant Colonel Sladen, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
