Headquarters, 30th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 205 (October 25, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Hugh T. Singleton (ASN: 38554910), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 119th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 3 April 1945, in Germany. Observing a wounded man lying helpless and exposed to enemy fire beside his disabled tank, Private First Class Singleton, with complete disregard for his safety, gallantly made his way under fire to the wounded man. Just as he reached him, a rocket exploded against the tank and a fragment broke Private First Class Singleton’s leg. A moment later a bullet struck his other leg. Despite his serous wounds, Private First Class Singleton, fighting off shock and pain, courageously assisted his wounded comrade to the shelter of a nearby house. He then remained with the wounded man until evacuation could be effected. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Private First Class Singleton, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
