Headquarters, 30th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 46 (August 25, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Ross Y. Simmons (ASN: 0-1291025), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 119th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 25 July 1944, in France. Captain Simmons was assigned top duty as Commanding Officer of an infantry organization given the mission of capturing an enemy-held town. With complete disregard for his personal safety, Captain Simmons personally led his most advanced assaulting elements, neutralized the opposition, and captured his objective with a minimum of loss of men and material. His gallant leadership inspired all men under his command to great effort. The personal bravery, fortitude, and unselfish devotion to duty exhibited by Captain Simmons reflect great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Armed Forces.
