The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Major (Infantry) Gardner M. Simes (ASN: 0-251821), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 120th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 9 July 1944, in France. Although he was painfully wounded during an artillery concentration after he had taken command of his battalion, Major Simes refused to be evacuated but gallantly continued with his duties until after the enemy had been repulsed. Major Simes’ outstanding courage was instrumental in keeping his battalion organized and in the repulse of a serious counterattack. The bravery, aggressive determination, and exemplary leadership exhibited by Major Simes reflect great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Armed Forces.
