The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Alfred M. Shull (ASN: 0-1297265), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 117th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 27 March 1945, in Germany. Despite heavy casualties being inflicted on his platoon and his company not being able to support him, First Lieutenant Shull, deciding that his platoon was not in a favorable defensive position, moved it forward toward its objective, drove the enemy from high ground, and used their positions for defense. The platoon refused to give ground in spite of several severe counterattacks. First Lieutenant Shull lost the use of one of his eyes when an exploding shell filled it with cinders and dust, but he refused to go for aid and remained in an exposed position until the high ground had been made secure. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by First Lieutenant Shull, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
