The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Jack M. Shelton (ASN: 36437623), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 120th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 25 March 1945, in Germany. Observing an enemy tank and seven infantrymen, Private First Class Shelton immediately volunteered to move forward and fire on them. Although he was sure to draw return fire, he boldly opened fire, killing two and wounding two of the enemy. The tank, now alerted, backed into position and directed heavy automatic fire on Private First Class Shelton, wounding him seriously. His gallant self-sacrifice aided in later dispersing the entire enemy group. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Private First Class Shelton, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
