The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Seymour Shefrin (ASN: 0-1289155), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 119th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 4 October 1944, in Germany. First Lieutenant Shefrin was serving as a forward observer for the Cannon Company of an Infantry Regiment engaged in an assault on the Siegfried Line. While observing from an extremely forward position, he was wounded. Although instructions had been issued to evacuate him, he elected to remain in his hazardous position because an enemy counterattack was expected. When the enemy counterattack was launched, First Lieutenant Shefrin, though painfully wounded, continued to skillfully direct fire on the attacking enemy. His bravery and complete disregard for the personal hazards involved are worthy of high praise. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by First Lieutenant Shefrin, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
