The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Charles R. Shaw (ASN: 0-1294204), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 120th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 22 November 1944, in Germany. Captain Shaw was Commanding Officer of an Infantry Company which was engaged in a determined attack against the enemy. He led his troops forward and captured his objective, in spite of the fact that mined areas prevented the employment of tanks for support. After a brief but intense fire fight, the enemy launched a counterattack supported by tanks, which the company repulsed under the direction of captain Shaw, who fearlessly commanded from an observation point which was under direct tank fire from an enemy point less than one hundred yards away. During the operation, Captain Shaw and his company knocked out a tank, captured sixty-nine prisoners, killed approximately thirty, and wounded many more. The bravery, aggressive determination, and exemplary leadership exhibited by Captain Shaw reflect great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Armed Forces.
